You might be surprised to realize that there are still a few things you might not have known about orthodontic treatment.

Think you know everything about braces? Think again! Your Catonsville orthodontist has some fun facts about braces that could blow your mind:

FactBraces don’t just straighten teeth; they also improve your bite.

Most people opting for braces do so to get a straighter and more attractive smile; however, did you know that your bite is just as Bracesimportant as straight teeth? Besides checking your teeth, your Catonsville orthodontist will also check your bite to see how braces can help. Think about it, straight teeth aren’t much good to you if you can’t chew or speak properly. Therefore, we must also focus on improving your bite.

FactStraighter teeth aren’t just a modern-day desire.

While it might seem hard to believe, desiring straighter teeth isn’t a new phenomenon. In fact, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, devices resembling orthodontics have been around and in use since 1,000 BC starting with the Greeks and Etruscans. While the word “braces” wasn’t actually coined until the early 1900’s, ways to straighten smiles have been around for centuries.

FactModern-day braces have been around since the 70s.

While the Greeks and Etruscans used gold wires to keep teeth from shifting and the early 20th-century dentists wrapped individual teeth with bands, it wasn’t until the 1970s that dentists created the braces that we know today. During this decade dental adhesives were created, which helped dentists adhere brackets to teeth, which removed the need to wrap each individual tooth. Also, gold and silver braces were phased out by less expensive stainless steel.

FactAfter orthodontic treatment you will still need to wear a retainer.

After your braces have been removed, we will then make a mold of your smile from which to design your retainers. These retainers must be worn to ensure that your teeth do not shift back. There are several types of retainers to choose from including a permanent bonded retainer; however, whichever one you opt for you must wear it each day. Your dentist can tell you for how long you should wear your retainer and whether you’ll just have to wear it at night. However, your retainer will need to be worn for the rest of your life if you want to maintain that straight smile.

Hopefully you learned something new and fun about this common dental treatment. If you’re interested in getting braces in Catonsville, we would be happy to schedule an initial consultation to decide which orthodontic treatment would be right for you and your smile. Call us today!
